Monkey Cakes!!

Monkey themed birthdays are all the rage! Last week we were asked to make two monkey cakes. The first was a 6 inch cake with a monkey standing on top and cupcakes with chocolate monkey faces on each one. The second was a chocolate monkey sitting on the edge of the cake holding a number one candle.

We made the monkey out of Modeling chocolate. He was modeled after the birthday invitation.

We placed him on the cake. Each chocolate monkey on the cupcakes was custom made by us using chocolate. Happy 1st Birthday Milo!!

We made a chocolate monkey and sat him down next to a number 1 candle. the plaque was made out of chocolate! Happy 1st Birthday Benjamin!!

Hail to the Redskins!!

Last weekend was Redskin cake weekend! We were asked to make a Groom's cake with a chocolate Redskins football and a Jersey coming down the side of the cake. The second cake was a Birthday cake with a chocolate Redskins football on top. We love making the footballs and can paint any team logo on top.

We start 0ff by tempering chocolate and making the chocolate football in a mold

I sketch out the logo with a food color marker

Then I paint in the colors

The final colors and details are painted on last

Here is the football on the groom's cake! Congratulations Meghan and Pat!!

Here is the other football on the Birthday cake! Happy Birthday David!

DJ Lance Cake!! Yo Gabba Gabba!!!!

My little one turned two this weekend since her favorite show is Yo Gabba Gabba, we had a YGG theme party for her! Her favorite character on the show is DJ Lance Rock, so I made DJ Lance and his Boombox out of cake.

The Figure is made from cake and Modeling chocolate and the boombox is made entirely out of cake with fondant on top and airbrushed silver with fondant details.

The cake flavor was a White cake with caramel, milk chocolate ganache, vanilla buttercream and candy crunchies between the layers. Needless to say she loved the cake and we even made it onto the Yo Gabba Gabba fansite! Check it out: gabbafriends.com

We didn't cut DJ Lance for fear of traumatizing the little ones at the party :-D

Amina & Khadijah's 13th Birthday Cake

Back in October of 2008, I got an e-mail from Amina asking us to make her and her friend's 13th Birthday cake on February 7th, 2009. She had a sketch of her cake with all the specific colors that she wanted on the cake. I drew a sketch for her with the colors and it was set, the girls were really happy with the final cake. The bottom tier was yellow buttermilk with alternating layers of Chocolate and Raspberry Buttercream. The top tier was alternating layers of chocolate and Red Velvet cake with Cookies and Cream Buttercream. I got an e-mail from one of the girls at the party the day after that said "the red velvet cake was so good I was having trouble contemplating reality!!"

Eric and Ellen's Carrot Wedding Cake!!

We got a picture from one of our favorite wedding planners, Terri Eaves of Bash, of Eric and Ellen's wedding cake that we made for them in November 2008 at the beautiful Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase. Since I had forgotten my camera, the only pic I had of the cake was this awful fuzzy one taken with my phone. So, needless to say, I was really excited to get such a wonderful image taken by Michael Bonfigli.

Cake was a 4 tier Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. Cake had a sugar ribbon border
with Swiss dots that were painted with a pearlized color to give it some shine!
We added some baby roses at the reception.
Congrats to Ellen & Eric!!

Louisette and Nevardo's Wedding Cakes!!!

Back in September of 2007 we made a wedding cake and a bunch of mini cakes for two of our favorite clients Louisette and Nevardo. We had done several cakes for them in the past and we were honored when they asked us to make their wedding cake(s). They wanted a main wedding cake and several small cakes, which they displayed on the Dessert Buffet. Each mini cake reflected something about the couple and their family. Christine Godsey from Soco Events sent me these wonderful pictures of the wedding cake and cake cutting. We love getting pics from event planners and photographers, because they always look a million times better than our
pics :-D

The cake is covered in Ivory fondant with chocolate fondant swirls and a royal Icing border
painted gold. The cake also has fuchsia sugar orchids cascading down the tiers.

Inauguration Cupcakes!

We can finally breath a sigh of relief, last week was one of the craziest weeks in DC not to mention over here at Fluffy Thoughts. We had over 400 cupcakes to make, each one topped with a handmade piece of chocolate made to resemble our 44th president.

The process is time consuming but the end result is worth it. We start by outlining the president's face with dark chocolate, then fill it with white chocolate that has been tinted red and blue. Most of the cupcakes we made were red velvet with cream cheese frosting, many had a filling of milk chocolate ganache. Some other popular flavors were chocolate cupcakes with Raspberry buttercream, and white cake filled with pineapple curd and topped with coconut buttercream.
